Vision for Art

Art is a vital part of children’s education, with a significant and valuable role in the taught curriculum and the enrichment opportunities we offer our pupils. The art curriculum develops children’s critical abilities, as well as an understanding of their own and others’ cultural heritages through the study of a diverse range of artists. Children develop their understanding of the visual language of art, with effective teaching and considered sequences of lessons and experiences, which will build year upon year, culminating in a confident and creative individual with a unique style and an attitude that allows them to be experimental with the skills and process knowledge they have been taught. As well as developing a love of working with art materials and techniques, we aim to nurture and encourage a love of the subject through their use of imagination, abstract thought, and generating original ideas in a relaxed and supportive environment.

Vision for Computing

At The Wells Free School, we believe that a high-quality Computing education has the power to change the world. The aim of the computing curriculum is to give pupils the knowledge they need to live in a future where technology will play a bigger role in our lives. Educators should provide a rich computing curriculum where pupils are able to explore a range of technology and apps developing a variety of computing skills, as well as understand the future of computing and its impact on the world. We will give our pupils lots of opportunities for practical, hands-on experiences to make sense of the world around them in a way that fosters a curiosity and a lifelong love for the subject. We aim to inspire the next generation of computer scientists, technicians, photographers, designers and programmers.

Vision for Design and Technology

Design and Technology has the potential to engage children in analysis and solving of design problems, leading to production of high-quality solutions across a variety of contexts. The aim of the Design and Technology curriculum is to provide pupils the opportunity to consolidate a variety of skills in designing and making a product with a ‘Design, Make and Evaluate’ approach, as well as develop a critical understanding in the impact on daily life and the wider world through evaluating present and past design and technology. Educators should provide a rich Design and Technology curriculum where pupils acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw upon disciplines that include Mathematics, Science, Computing and Art. We will ensure our pupils have an innovative environment which allows them to investigate and experiment in a safe, supporting environment. We aim to inspire the next generation to be empowered in designing and evaluating their own products to help solve various world problems.

Vision for Geography

Geography encourages the learner to ask and answer questions of the immediate and the wider world around them, including both the natural and human aspects. Our children leave TWFS as curious, knowledgeable geographers fascinated by the wonders of Earth and with a keen interest to further explore its human and physical features. With greater awareness of diverse cultures and countries, our children become respectful, responsible and tolerant citizens, who interact with the world with care and empathy. Our geography curriculum equips our children with knowledge of people, places, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. We introduce and encourage the use of geographical and l vocabulary throughout all lessons and provide regular opportunities to explore our locality with fieldwork exercises.

Vision for History

At The Wells Free School, we believe that a high-quality history education will help pupils gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. It should inspire pupil’s curiosity to know more about the past. Teaching should equip pupils to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement. Through our history curriculum, children will learn through three different lenses, these being well-being and social change, historical figures and settlement and invasion.

Our main aims are to:

  • Develop effective use of assessment in history
  • Develop confidence in evaluating the reliability of primary and secondary sources
  • Develop links and connections between units to secure chronological awareness.

Vision for PE

At The Wells Free school, we recognise the importance PE plays in the curriculum and their wider lives. We want to aid our children in obtaining the values and skills to celebrate and respect their own success and that of others. The aim of our PE curriculum is to develop children’s basic physical competencies, build confidence in their abilities, and build the foundations for a love of sport and physical activity. Through PSHE, RSHE and PE, we strive to educate our children and families to develop a greater understanding of how to live healthy lifestyles and make healthy choices.

Our objectives in the teaching of PE align with the National Curriculum in that we aim to ensure all children:

  • Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
  • Are physically active for sustained periods of time
  • Engage in competitive sports and activities
  • Lead healthy, active lives.

Vision for PSHE

At The Wells Free School we aim to promote healthy, independent and responsible members of society. We encourage all our pupils to play a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community through our ‘School Council’, fundraising events, supporting nominated charities and involvement in community activities. Our pupils are given opportunities throughout the community to develop confidence self-motivation and an understanding of their rights and responsibilities within our diverse society.

Vision for RE

At The Wells Free School, pupils come from a diversity of ethnic, cultural, religious, and linguistic backgrounds. Through the study of religious education, pupils’ understanding of the multicultural and multi-faith society that we live in today is promoted and combined with sensitivity to the differences of faith, culture and practice within our school which therefore leads to an atmosphere of tolerance and goodwill to others.

TWFS promotes, supports and encourages excellent practice in the teaching of Religious Education (RE). The agreed syllabus aims to ensure that all children:

  • Develop understanding of concepts and mastery of skills to make sense of religion and belief, at an appropriate level of challenge for their age. From EYFS to KS2.
  • Develop positive and respectful attitudes and values and to reflect and relate their learning in RE to their own beliefs and experiences both presently and in the future.
  • Have the opportunity to learn that there are those who do not hold religious beliefs and have their own philosophical perspectives, and subject matter should facilitate integration and promotion of shared values whether they are religious or not.

At TWFS, we are committed to providing our children with an exciting, positive and safe learning environment, in which they have the opportunity to develop their knowledge and understanding of religions, to share their beliefs and experiences without fear of judgment or negativity, while contributing to their spiritual, moral social and cultural development.

Vision for Spanish

To deliver a high-quality language education to foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. To enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. Language teaching should provide the foundation for learning further languages and promote intercultural understanding.

Spanish is firmly embedded within our curriculum with weekly timetabled lessons delivered by a language specialist in Years 3-6. This ensures consistency and continuity of language learning throughout the school. The scheme is topic based but with clear progression through the language building blocks of phonics, vocabulary and grammar to build skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing. At the early stages the emphasis is on developing speaking and listening skills with more focus on reading and writing at upper KS2. As learning a language involves an accumulation of language skills, these are threaded throughout each topic and interleaved with retrieval and distributed practice to embed in long term memory. Our children leave with a solid foundation in language learning which they are keen to continue at secondary school.
